Mother blessing

A rite of passage into parenthood

In all cultures and traditions, major events and transitions in life are marked with ceremonies, parties or rituals. In Sweden, for example, we celebrate graduation with white clothes and placards, we get married and give countless eulogies to the bride and groom and we have naming/baptisms to jointly welcome our babies into the world.

The Native American Navajo people mark the transition to motherhood with a rite called Blessingway. The purpose is to open up for life-affirming, positive intentions that in turn lead to healing.

Mother blessing is not the same thing, and it is important to distinguish the traditional and deeply sacred Blessingway and Mother blessing as a modern cultural phenomenon here in the West.

Many people wish to move away from the more commercial concept of Babyshower to something less material, which focuses more on honoring and celebrating the expectant parent and showing their support and presence for them. This is something we want to support by holding a mother blessing, or nesting party, where we create a nurturing and healing circle around the birthing person in preparation for the great change that birth brings.

Contact us and we will be happy to talk further about how we can organize a personal and empowering transition ceremony together!
