"One day one of my co-workers mentioned the birth doula career to me and wondered why I wasn’t one yet, but I had never really looked into it before. That day I went home and read everything I could about doulas and was also given information about an incredible doula trainer in the area. I signed up that day and became a certified doula with DONA International in 2017.
I learned so much more about birth after becoming a doula and supporting clients from beginning to the end, I fell absolutely in love with this career."
I am an American/Puerto Rican who moved from the USA to Sweden at the age of 11. I have had a huge fascination with birth since I was a teenager, and witnessed my first birth in 2013 at the age of 22 while working as a midwife assistant in a high risk labor and delivery hospital in Lund, Sweden. I witnessed ~300 births during my time working there and left that job to seek other opportunities of growth within the same field.
Fastforward to 2017, I found myself back in the States, newly married with my husband, who is a strength and conditioning coach, who later specialized in training pregnant and postpartum clients. I was working in a baby store in Los Angeles, California supporting new parents with signing up for childbirth and breastfeeding classes, renting out breast pumps, sizing pregnant people for their pregnancy and pumping bras and working with incredible professionals in the birth world. One day one of my co-workers mentioned the birth doula career to me and wondered why I wasn’t one yet, but I had never really looked into it before. That day I went home and read everything I could about doulas and was also given information about an incredible doula trainer in the area. I signed up that day and became a certified doula with DONA International in 2017.
I learned so much more about birth after becoming a doula and supporting clients from beginning to the end, I fell absolutely in love with this career. Since 2017 I have had other jobs but always taken on birth clients when I could. In 2021 I would finally open my own business and get to start working as a full-time birth doula at a doula agency in Portland, Oregon. I supported 125 families up until the Summer of 2024, when my husband and I made the decision to move back to Sweden.
Since then I have gone back to working in the postpartum unit in Malmö, Sweden, supporting new parents right after birth. Some patients have complications after birth, or the baby is in need of extra vital checks, post-cesarean births and lots of breastfeeding support. It was here I met the wonderful Jade and Matilde who work as nurses and plan to become midwives but have been wanting to start supporting births. I had been dreaming of training doulas one day, and was so excited when they said yes to us three collaborating!
Seeing patients at work, we hear a lot of people’s birth stories, and just wish we had met a lot of them much sooner, to educate not only about the birthing process but to also help them feel confident going into birth and the postpartum period, especially those who have the desire to breastfeed. I feel so lucky to have found two women who love this work as much as I do and who also want to make a positive impact on people’s memories of birth and postpartum. We look forward to meeting you, wherever you might be in your journey!
If I am not at work I like hiking in nature with my husband, cooking food or working out at the gym.
